Secure your everyday devices

Reduce common endpoint risks through updates, sensible installation choices and protected storage.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

Learning objectives

  • Identify the value of updates and encryption
  • Choose trusted software sources
  • Understand what a VPN does and does not protect
01

Maintain the device

Install supported operating-system and application updates. Remove software you no longer need, and replace unsupported systems through a planned process. Use screen locking and full-disk encryption where supported. Encryption protects stored data when a device is locked or powered off; it does not make an unlocked, compromised session safe.

02

Limit unnecessary software and permissions

Install software from approved sources. Browser extensions can read or modify sensitive pages, so review their permissions and remove unused ones. At work, use the organisation’s approved tools rather than installing a convenient substitute that creates untracked data storage.

03

Use networks with context

HTTPS protects traffic between your browser and the correct service. A VPN can protect the network path to its endpoint, but it does not stop you entering information on a phishing site or protect a compromised device. Follow workplace remote-access policy and avoid treating a VPN badge as a universal guarantee.

APPLIED EXAMPLE

Put it in context

A browser extension requests access to every website to provide a simple theme. That permission does not match its purpose. Choose a less intrusive alternative or use the browser’s built-in options.

Illustrative scenario for learning, not a claim about a verified customer incident.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming antivirus replaces updates
  • Installing unreviewed extensions
  • Treating a VPN as protection from every threat

Your practical checklist

Checklist ticks are temporary and are not recorded as account progress.

MINI RECAP

Good device hygiene combines maintenance, limited permissions and careful use. No single tool replaces the others.

Put your understanding to the test.
