Physical security is information security

Protect workspaces, documents and devices without making everyday work unnecessarily difficult.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

Learning objectives

  • Recognize common physical exposure
  • Handle visitors and lost devices appropriately
  • Dispose of sensitive material safely
01

Control the workspace

Lock your screen when you step away. Keep confidential conversations and screens away from public view. Follow visitor registration and escort procedures. A uniform or a confident request is not proof that someone should enter a restricted area.

02

Protect information in every form

Printed pages, whiteboards, badges and removable drives can reveal as much as a laptop. Use approved storage and disposal arrangements. Report a lost badge or device quickly so access can be revoked or other protective steps considered.

APPLIED EXAMPLE

Put it in context

A visitor follows a group through a controlled door. A polite check and a call to reception protects access without confrontation. Do not lend your own badge to resolve the inconvenience.

Illustrative scenario for learning, not a claim about a verified customer incident.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving an unlocked laptop briefly
  • Throwing confidential paper in general waste
  • Delaying a lost-badge report

Your practical checklist

Checklist ticks are temporary and are not recorded as account progress.

MINI RECAP

Physical controls support digital controls by limiting who can reach devices and information.

Put your understanding to the test.
