WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Learning objectives
- Compare BYOD and company-owned models
- Choose proportional management controls
- Prepare a lost-device response
Choose the ownership model first
BYOD allows personal ownership; company-owned models give the organisation more control over hardware and configuration. Document what can be managed, inspected or erased. A work profile can separate business information, but the exact capability depends on the platform and management design. Users need to understand those boundaries.
Control access to business information
Use supported operating systems, strong device locking, encryption and approved applications. Access decisions can consider device compliance alongside identity. Restrict unnecessary permissions and review how work data can be copied to personal applications or backups. Enforcement should match a documented policy and the data involved.
Respond to loss deliberately
Record the device, time and affected accounts. Revoke sessions or access through the approved response process. A selective wipe may differ from a full-device wipe, and evidence or personal-data concerns can affect the decision. Do not promise that remote wipe always succeeds; the device may not reconnect.
APPLIED EXAMPLE
Put it in context
A fictional sales phone is lost in a taxi. The team revokes work access, reviews recent sign-ins and follows its documented management policy. It does not assume that sending a wipe command proves the data has been removed.
Illustrative scenario for learning, not a claim about a verified customer incident.Common mistakes
- Treating BYOD as company ownership
- Collecting more personal information than needed
- Relying on a wipe command as proof
Your practical checklist
Checklist ticks are temporary and are not recorded as account progress.
MINI RECAP
Mobile security works best when technical controls, ownership boundaries and incident procedures agree.
Put your understanding to the test.
